‘Summer Peak Season’
As regular readers of our monthly exclusive bestseller charts from China will recall, the summertime market each year is heavily impacted by guided readings for schoolchildren during vacation. China’s education culture for youngsters includes expectations that reading lists provided by schools will be taken seriously and acted on in each household.

‘Dream of the Red Chamber’
What’s more, as you may remember, the publishing of new editions of various books in China has much more significance than it might in many Western markets, leading many Chinese readers to buy successive versions of the same titles for their home libraries.
As our associates at Jiang Yanping’s Beijing OpenBook publishing research group tell us in their look at July’s marketplace, “The book retail market has entered its ‘summer peak season’ with four great classic novels undoubtedly essential to summer reading lists for primary- and secondary-school students, generation after generation.”
In July, the Publishing House of the China Literary Federation’s 2016 version of Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber ranked No. 3 in sales. You’ll find an earlier edition from People’s Literature Publishing House—that one released in 1998—is also on the list this month, at No. 8. New life is available to many books when they appear in fresh editions.
Last year at this point, the 2016 version also showed an impressive performance, its 2023 sales driving its ranking to No. 14. The title has been a bestseller in July for several years, mainly propelled by its inevitable selection as required reading for high-school students.
In July, bundling the 2016 edition of Red Chamber with the 1947 From the Soil by Fei Xiaotong—also selected as a required reading—led to exceptionally good market performance in short video e-commerce channels, OpenBook’s team says.

Our regular readers won’t be surprised to see Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Andre Gide’s Strait is the Gate on the fiction list, along with a 50th-anniversary edition of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude: the Chinese reading public clearly is more broadly familiar with at least some of the West’s key works of the modern era than Western readers are familiar with classics, new or old, from China.
If anything, the title Dream of the Red Chamber may tend to imply to some Western minds that the book has to do with “red” culture as in communism. Far from it.
Dream of the Red Chamber not only predates political ideas of communism but is also known as The Story of the Stone and is an 18th-century book prized for its perspectives on the much older High Qing dynastic era (1683 to 1799).
Considered by many to be among China’s four greatest works of classical literature, the book’s text has have undergone torturously complex manuscript iterations and analysis. The first printed edition is believed to have appeared in 1791.

The instigating device of the book has to do with a “sentient stone left over when the goddess Nüwa mended heaven” and this thinking rock has a strong desire to know the pleasures of the “red dust,” a phrase, it turns out, which means the everyday world of human beings.
With the help of a Taoist priest, the stone gets its wish and is reborn as the adolescent swell guy, Jia Baoyu, who becomes part of a romantic triangle between the wealthy aristocratic houses of Rongguo and Ningguo.
Scholars generally agree that this sprawling work has between 30 and 40 major characters and some 400 others, and there said to be 14 or more cinematic adaptations already made. And yet it’s largely unknown in Western cultures.
As it happens, a new two-hour film, Hong lou meng, or Honglou Dream, has been made by director Mei Hu and released just this month—going wide on August 16 in China—while a 2010 Chinese television series, The Dream of Red Mansions, is available with English subtitles on Amazon Prime in 50 episodes.

Choreography, Fine Art, Film: ‘A Thousand Hamlets’
In April, Singapore news media carried stories about a tour from China of a Lotus Award-winning dance drama, A Dream of Red Mansions, being given performances staged by Jiangsu Center for the Performing Arts.
In May, Taiwan’s National Palace Museum opened an exhibition of artwork relative to Dream, curated by Wan LIang-chung and titled, The Splendor of Dream of the Red Chamber.
More work on and around this Dream is surfacing in various international news accounts, making it clear that Western audiences soon may encounter one or more interpretations, not unlike the success found in at least three recent screen adaptions of Liu Cixin’s Three-Body Problem, as we’ve discussed in earlier editions of our China Bestsellers.

Those who have looked at some of several Chinese television series making the jump to Western streamers (in October 2022, we discussed Love Between Fairy and Devil, carried by Netflix, for example), will see the stylistic parallels in these Red Chamber-based works.
Much of the visual impact in these works is driven by filmmakers’ tacit agreement on a romanticized Ming-to-Qing aesthetic now fully in place with complex costuming and sets for lavish displays of personal beauty (male and female), dynastic loyalties, and magical interventions, not infrequently tangled with tales of complicated and vaguely illicit romantic entanglements.
The film director Hu spoke at an August 11 premiere of her two-hour film, pointing this out. As quoted by Zhang Rui at China.org.cn, Hu told the audience in Beijing, “My movie is just one interpretation. There’s a saying that goes, ‘There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes.’ Similarly, a thousand people have their own interpretations of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber.’
“Given this,” Hu said, ‘even if there are regrets in my version, it doesn’t matter. I hope to spark further interest for more works related to the novel.”
Below, then, are OpenBook’s overall lists from July 2024 of bestsellers in fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books, followed by its lists of bestselling fiction and nonfiction in China by authors from outside the country. At the end of our article, as always, you’ll find notes on how the lists are constructed.

Notes on the Charts
OpenBook is a privately owned industry-data research firm based in Beijing. It functions somewhat as Nielsen and NDP do from the West, and Nielsen Book Research International has worked with OpenBook in Asian operations. With authoritative data and information resources, OpenBook is able to deliver consulting service to partners who would like to explore the Chinese book market and identify suitable partners.
At last report, OpenBook monitored more than 26,000 online and offline bookstores.
The online channel includes digital retailers such as large self-operated online stores, platform stores, and small- and medium-sized stores. The offline channels include more than 4,900 bookstores. Coverage includes most of the state-owned and influential privately owned bookstores in 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Tibet are not included in OpenBook’s system.
In 2023, OpenBook tracked around 72.31 billion RMB in sales (US$10.12 billion).
Retail outlets include:
- Traditional bookstores
- Supermarkets
- Campus bookstores
- “Professional” stores, said to be small stores with a specific industrial or trade focus
- Airport stores
In addition, OpenBook is drawing data from online bookstores of three main types:
- The “Tmall” stores of Alibaba (Tmall is described as a marketplace of companies that create storefronts online to sell products including books)
- The “JingDong” Stores of JD.com (similar to Tmall as a marketplace of both individual companies and bookstores operated by JD.com)
- Ten independent online bookselling retailers
China has 500 or more publishers in operation today. Most of them are government-owned. Private publishers are required to generate ISBNs for their titles from a publishing company that is government-owned—which, in other words, creates a system in which all ISBNs are registered through government channels. The government approves each book published in China.
