The Fifth of Five Categories’ 2024 Longlists

A final longlist from the National Book Foundation of the total five longlists (50 titles) is here today, September 27. This is the fifth of the five longlists for this year’s competition.

The shortlists for all five categories of the 75th National Book Awards are to be released on Tuesday (October 1). The formal ceremony and fundraiser for the foundation is scheduled for November 20 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Nine of the 10 poets on this longlist are first-time National Book Award honorees. The only poet previously honored is Rowan Ricardo Phillips, who was longlisted in 2015 for his poetry collection Heaven

In terms of the number of submissions made by publishers for this category, it is quite close to last year’s number: In 2023, there were 295 books put forward for consideration in this category, compared to this year’s 299.

Jurors for the 2024 poetry list this year are Richard Blanco (chair), Carolyn Forché, Tyehimba Jess, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and Rena Priest.
